Cherki's cheeky mid-match act an 'insult in the pro game' as Guardiola shakes his head

Alan Pardew did little to hide his disgust as he labelled Rayan Cherki's showboating in the Carabao Cup final an 'insult to the pro game.'

Midway through the second half, Cherki brought the ball down on his chest before he juggled the ball three times.

What made the French star's trickery all the more impressive was the fact he had his eyes away from the ball and instead scanning for any Arsenal players who were ready to clatter into him, with Gunners defender Ben White happily taking the opportunity to do so while earning a yellow card.

Cherki's cheeky act also occurred when City had already scored both of their goals in the 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley.

Although City supporters might've enjoyed Cherki's skills, not everyone was a fan.

Pep talk

One figure who seemingly did not enjoy the flashy winger's tricks was City boss Pep Guardiola.

As slo-mo footage of Cherki keeping the ball up rolled, the camera then cut to Guardiola, who shook his head and furiously chewed his gum.

Guardiola wasn't alone in his frustrations with Cherki, as former Newcastle boss Pardew expressed his distaste on talkSPORT's Final Word.

You're a Cherk

"Cherki's a bit naive, a bit young," Pardew said.

"Juggling with the ball like that, it's an insult in the pro game. Pep was shaking his head.

"If you're a pro footballer, that is a no-go."

Co-host Majestic then asked Pardew if such an act was equally as insulting as a player rounding the goalkeeper, stopping the ball, dropping to their knees and then heading it into the back of the net.

"I think juggling the ball is actually worse," Pardew replied.

The 64-year-old added: "It's just unnecessary. He didn't need to do it.

"He was exuberant, he was having a really good game. He certainly had a game where all the little things we like about him, he was doing very, very well.

"I'm sure Pep will give him a little tap around the head and say, 'Don't do that again.' That's what I would have done."

What's the story, evening glory?

Cherki's showboating was the only blot on an otherwise dream day out for Guardiola at Wembley.

Two goals from Nico O'Reilly in the space of four minutes secured City the Carabao Cup, marking the seventh time the club has won the trophy from 2014 onwards.

City and the Carabao Cup have enjoyed a love affair over the past decade

Unfortunately for Arsenal, defeat to City means the wait for their first piece of silverware since 2020 rolls on.

The result also came at a cost, as defender William Saliba picked up an ankle injury which has ruled him out of international duty for France.
