Loan Watch: Goals, assists and familiar faces

Ethan Nwaneri came on as an 18th-minute sub and scored for Marseille in their Ligue 1 clash with Lille at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

Ethan opened the scoring shortly before the break, though his side fell to a 2-1 defeat following a winner from former Gunner Olivier Giroud. The result keeps OM third in the table, but Lille in fifth have closed the gap behind them to two points.

**Fabio Vieira** grabbed another goal contribution to add to his burgeoning tally for the season, claiming an assist as Hamburg soared into a two-goal half-time lead away at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Fabio set up former Arsenal star Sambi Lokonga to double HSV’s advantage on Saturday night at Signal Iduna Park, but Dortmund recovered in the second half to snatch a 3-2 win. Hamburg conceded three penalties in the match with the hosts dispatching two of them, and the defeat leaves them 12th in the German top-flight.

In Portugal, Porto continue to flourish with **Jakub Kiwior** at the heart of their defence. The Dragaos booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday, completing a 4-1 aggregate victory over Stuttgart with a 2-0 home win on the night, with Jakub introduced for the final third of that contest to help see it out. They will renew acquaintances with Nottingham Forest in the last eight, having lost 2-0 at the City Ground in the league phase back in October. The Polish international then played the full match back in Liga Portugal action on Sunday, as his team came from behind to win 2-1 at Braga, cementing their title bid with what is now a seven-point lead.

**Reiss Nelson** was named on the bench as Brentford continued their European push with a goalless draw at Leeds United on Saturday night, while **Karl Hein** missed a huge 1-0 win for Werder Bremen at relegation rivals Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga with a hand injury.

In Sweden, **Charles Sagoe Jr** got another 90 minutes under his belt on Friday as Kalmar played out a 1-1 friendly draw with Malmo, while **Ismeal Kabia** played two full matches in the past week as Shrewsbury Town suffered successive defeats against Bristol Rovers and Crewe Alexandra in League Two.

**Louie Copley** did not feature for Crawley Town in either of their League Two matches through the week as he returns to the training pitch following an injury lay-off. Crawley drew 1-1 with Barnet in midweek, before a slender 1-0 weekend loss at Fleetwood Town.

**Will Sweet** was twice an unused substitute for Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League South as they underwent a managerial transition between their two games. A 3-2 win at Farnborough was the final match in charge for the outgoing Lee Bradbury, before interim manager, former England striker Andy Carroll, took the reins for a 1-0 home victory over Torquay United. **Lucas Nygaard**’s season in the Danish Second Division has resumed, the young goalkeeper featuring in recent defeats by Skive (4-2) and Fremad Amager (1-0).

From our women’s loanees, **Cecily Wellesley-Smith** opened her scoring account for Swedish outfit Rosengard last Monday, rounding off a 3-0 victory against Vaxjo in the Svenska Cupen group stage. In the same group, **Vivienne Lia** came off the bench to play 25 minutes in Hammarby’s 3-0 win over Vittsjo, qualifying them for a semi-final which they won 2-0 on Friday over Kristianstad. Vivienne played 29 minutes in that knockout clash, with her side setting up an intriguing final against Hacken, which will be played in May.

Several of our loanees were in WSL action over the weekend, including **Jenna Nighswonger** who played the full match in a 2-1 victory for Aston Villa at Leicester City on Sunday, moving Villa up to eighth. **Rosa Kafaji** returned to the Brighton starting XI this weekend to play 73 minutes of a goalless draw with Liverpool, having come on for the final quarter of a 2-1 loss at Chelsea on Wednesday night - Rosa’s Seagulls are directly below Jenna’s Villa in ninth. **Laila Harbert** remained on the bench on Saturday in Everton’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United, leaving the Toffees sixth.

Fifth-placed Bristol City have kept pace with the pack competing for promotion from the WSL 2 this season, after a fantastic 2-1 win over leaders Charlton Athletic on Sunday in which **Jessie Gale** played the final 14 minutes to successfully see out three important points. Moving north of the border, **Maddy Earl** was among the substitutes for Glasgow City in an agonising late 1-0 defeat by Rangers in the SWPL 1. The two sides meet again next Sunday in the SWPL Cup final at Motherwell’s Fir Park.
