Chelsea‘all clear’to sign Dutch star from Premier League rivals

Chelsea are set to be given a clear path to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs this summer, with reports indicating the Black Cats would be willing to sanction a deal should the Blues meet their valuation.

The Dutch shot-stopper has emerged as one of the Premier League’s breakout performers this season, attracting interest from several top clubs after an impressive debut campaign in England. Roefs has featured heavily for Sunderland, recording strong underlying numbers including one of the league’s highest save percentages and multiple clean sheets.

According to recent reports, CHELSEA are among the leading contenders for his signature and are actively prioritising the recruitment of a new first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2026–27 season.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are understood to be open to selling if their valuation — believed to be in the region of £50 million — is met, a figure that would represent a significant profit on the fee paid to sign him from NEC Nijmegen last summer.

Chelsea’s growing interest comes amid continued uncertainty over their goalkeeping situation. Robert Sánchez has struggled to fully cement his place as the club’s long-term No.1, with inconsistency and high-profile errors raising concerns within the coaching staff.

Roefs’ profile — commanding in the air, confident with the ball at his feet, and statistically among the league’s most effective shot-stoppers — aligns with Chelsea’s desire for a modern goalkeeper capable of playing in a possession-based system.

Competition for his signature could be fierce, however, with other elite clubs monitoring his development following Sunderland’s strong return to the top flight.

Would Roefs be an upgrade on Sánchez?

Sánchez has shown flashes of quality since arriving at Stamford Bridge, particularly with his distribution and ability to play out from the back. However, his time at CHELSEA has been defined by inconsistency. Costly mistakes and lapses in concentration have undermined his case to be the undisputed No.1.

Roefs, by contrast, has built his reputation this season on reliability. His shot-stopping metrics are elite, and his composure has stood out in a newly promoted side facing regular pressure. That ability to perform consistently under fire is something Chelsea have lacked between the posts.

There is, however, an element of risk. Roefs is still relatively inexperienced at the highest level, with just one full Premier League season behind him. Moving to a club like Chelsea — where scrutiny is relentless — presents a very different challenge to playing at Sunderland.

Even so, CHELSEA’s need for stability may outweigh those concerns. If the club are serious about resetting their defensive foundation, a goalkeeper in form and on an upward trajectory may be a smarter investment than persisting with inconsistency.
