Opinion: Chelsea have very simple transfer decision to make with Newcastle star this summer

Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade is a player Chelsea have always seemed to like.

Before he joined Newcastle from Stuttgart last summer, it was reported that Chelsea were interested in signing Woltemade.

Of course, no deal ever materialised, but fast forward to now, and the Blues could get another opportunity to finally land him.

What are your thoughts on Nick Woltemade potentially replacing Liam Delap?

Chelsea should enquire about Nick Woltemade’s availability

Journalist Simon Phillips recently claimed that Chelsea are ready to enquire about Woltemade’s availability if Newcastle come knocking for Liam Delap.

It is thought that Delap is seeking a move away from Chelsea and that Newcastle are interested in him.

Should Newcastle make an approach for Delap, Chelsea should definitely ask if a deal for Woltemade is possible. Given what the Blues need and what the 24-year-old can offer them, deciding whether to do so is quite an easy call to make.

At 6’6″, Woltemade has the height and strength to play in the Premier League, but what the German has also shown is that he has the technical ability to succeed in the division.

Woltemade may be a big forward, but his close control is good, as is his first touch. He has gone off the boil compared to the start of the season, but Woltemade can also finish.

Chelsea will be very aware of that after watching him score twice against them earlier this term.

Woltemade can also play as both a No.9 and an attacking midfielder. After Cole Palmer’s injury problems, having the Germany international as a No.10 option next season would not be bad.

Delap, Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu are Liam Rosenior’s striker options right now. But after Delap’s struggles and with Guiu still being just 20, most Chelsea fans would probably prefer a strike force of Pedro, Woltemade and Emanuel Emegha.

Emegha is joining Chelsea from Strasbourg in the summer, so the club will definitely be bringing in at least one new centre-forward when the transfer market opens.
