Gary Neville shushed a Manchester City fan who trolled him during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Neville, who is currently a pundit on Sky Sports, was on commentary duty alongside Peter Drury for the crunch tie. Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-0, ending the Gunners’ quadruple dreams and winning the trophy for the ninth time.
In the aftermath of the match, Neville was taking a picture with a Manchester City fan when, out of the blue, another supporter shouted:
“Neville! Neville! The red c*nt! Neville’s a wan*er”.
After taking picture with fan, Neville turned and made a shushing gesture toward the angry supporter. The City fan then asked him, ‘Where is your club?’ in reference to Manchester United’s early exit from the competition.
Neville continued shushing gesture, and the fan laughed hysterically. The former Manchester United defender then made the 'calma' gesture before saying something that was not audible, waving, and turning away.
Neville slams Manchester City star for ‘arrogant’ display during Carabao Cup final against Arsenal
Neville didn’t mince words while talking about Rayan Cherki’s showboating midway through the second half, with City already two goals ahead.
Cherki attempted to goad Arsenal players by performing some kick-ups shortly after City’s second goal and ended up being clattered into by Ben White, who was visibly irritated.
Speaking on commentary, Neville was critical of the incident, labeling it as ‘arrogant’ and insisting that it was too early to start celebrating victory.
“I don't think he likes that White, I think it's a bit too early for that if I am being honest,” Neville said. “I think I might have done that myself and he (Pep) didn't like it either. Pep Guardiola is a professional, confident but not arrogant. That was a little bit arrogant from Cherki. He (Cherki) is smiling as well.
“You have always got to remember that Arsenal can get a goal and you start to look silly if you are celebrating with 20-odd minutes to go. His team-mates will not think it's a great idea either.”
Pep Guardiola was also clearly dissatisfied with Cherki’s showboating, as he was spotted on the touchline shaking his head at the antics. While Arsenal still hold a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, Neville believes City’s victory in the EFL Cup final ‘landed a major blow’ on Arsenal’s title charge.
The two teams will meet for a third time this season in what could be the Premier League title decider on April 19.
