Celtics Rookie Max Shulga Makes Unusual Franchise History

Max Shulga had a busy Sunday for the Boston Celtics.

Shulga scored 12 points off the bench for the G League's Maine Celtics on Sunday afternoon. The Celtics then recalled the first-year guard to their NBA roster, and he suited up again that evening.

Joe Mazzulla called on Shulga to play the final two minutes of a 102-92 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 23-year-old registered his first career NBA points with a layup and two free throws in the final moments of NBC's primetime matchup.

Shulga solidified a unique distinction in the Celtics' record book. Maine Celtics noted that Shulga became the first player in franchise history to score for the NBA and G League teams on the same day.

The Orlando Magic selected Shulga with the No. 57 pick in this year's draft before trading him to Boston. The guard averaged 14.5 points in two seasons at VCU after transferring from Utah State.

Shulga had played eight minutes in five games for the Celtics without scoring, most recently called for two fouls in two minutes against the Golden State Warriors last Wednesday. Along with getting on the scoreboard Sunday, the Ukrainian-born prospect grabbed his first career NBA rebound and notched his second assist.

The Celtics recently converted Shulga's two-way contract into a standard two-year deal. He's averaging 15.8 points, 6.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game in 13 G League games this season.
