Nico O'Reilly: The Manchester City starlet who lit up Wembley

For Manchester City’s rising star Nico O’Reilly, the Carabao Cup Final was a day he will never forget.

On Saturday, he celebrated his 21st birthday - and 24 hours later, he delivered a brace that secured the trophy for his boyhood Club.

His performances have propelled him into the spotlight at both Club and international level.

Many people now regard him as one of the brightest young prospects in European football, and his display in his first major final at Wembley showed exactly why.

O’Relly’s versatility only adds to his value. Comfortable as a full-back or a central midfielder, he poses an equal threat in both boxes.

He constantly looks to drive forward, and those very instiancts proved decisive in the Final - first pouncing on a mistake from Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa to open the scoring, before darting ahead of his marker to nod in a second from an inch-perfect Matheus Nunes cross.

At full-time he could hardly comprehend what he had just achieved.

“It’s a dream come true to score at Wembley and win a Final. I’m over the moon that we played so well tonight, and we need to keep going,” he told ITV Sport.

“Celebrating in front of the fans is probably the best feeling I’ve ever had. The fans are so good that they were all going crazy throughout the whole game. I’m grateful for them.”

Despite the pressure, the young defender remains unfazed, composed and even energised by the occasion.

His humility, hard-work, and never give in attitude has enabled him to rise through the City academy, and they’re traits that continue to define his game today.

Ahead of the Final, he summed up his journey with that same grounded perspective.

“I’m just a kid from Manchester. I just try to take each day as it comes, give my best and help the team in any way I can,” he explained.

“I’ve got great players all around me, which makes things a lot easier for me - It’s amazing to play alongside them.

His list of accomplishments to date far outweigh his age, with a senior England debut late last year to go alongside a crucial goal in a Champions League victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu - and now a maiden major honour.

Pep Guardiola lauded O’Reilly’s dominant performance too, describing his remarkable season as extraordinary.

“He impressed a lot when he first started to play. He played as a holding midfielder against Newcastle and was unbelievable.

“He can play in the pocket; it is his natural position. Every cross he is there, in the aerial actions, he is really strong, especially offensive.

“It was surprising for me, the season he has had so far has been extraordinary.”

But if you look back at his trajectory since joining the City academy aged eight, he’s always been tipped for greatness.

After captaining the under-18s to a league title back in 2023, he made his first-team breakthrough the following year with a dream appearance in the Community Shield.

Cup competitions are often viewed as the perfect breeding ground for youngsters, and it’s been no different for O’Reilly.

He played a key part in the two Carabao Cup games City competed in last season before they were narrowly defeated by Tottenham Hotspur.

He was also an important figure in the Club’s run to the FA Cup Final, and this season he accumulated 364 minutes in their Carabao Cup campaign.

If there was anyone destined to grab this Final by the scruff of the neck and win it for his team, it was O’Reilly.

And in doing so, he became the third-youngest player to score a brace in a League Cup showpiece after Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Liverpool’s Ronnie Whealan.

At the highest level, attitude is often what separates the good from the exceptional, and O’Reilly has showcased his own elite mentality by focusing on what can be gained going forward from this triumph.

“This competition is huge in English football. In the semis we beat the reigning holders [Newcastle] and then we beat a great team like Arsenal in the final,” he told the Club website.

“To play at Wembley is always amazing and special and now we need to kick on.”

Kick-on they will, with silverware still up for grabs as the season heads towards its conclusion. City are ready to push Arsenal all the way in the league, and they could yet return to Wembley in the FA Cup.

For O’Reilly, he will be hoping to add to his growing medal collection, and force his way into England’s World Cup squad this summer.

After a career defining weekend, the sky truly is the limit for this blue.
