New England Patriots: Land Offensive Tackle With 20 Career Starts

The New England Patriots needed to address their offensive tackle depth after losing a key backup, leaving the position with three inexperienced players outside of Will Campbell and Morgan Moses. Vederian Lowe joined the San Francisco 49ers, and Thayer Munford Jr. remains unsigned. Meanwhile, Marcus Bryant only played 19 offensive snaps as a rookie, while Sebastian Gutierrez has only played in three snaps, and Lorenz Metz has yet to play in a regular-season game.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have signed James Hudson III to a one-year deal. He is on his third team, entering his sixth year in the league after spending the first four seasons with the Cleveland and last year with the New York Giants. Hudson has started 20 games, including the playoffs, logging 362 snaps at left tackle, 1,114 at right tackle, and 46 as an extra offensive lineman, totaling 1,522 snaps. He will vie for the swing tackle job this offseason.

The New York Giants signed James Hudson III to a two-year, $12 million contract last offseason. He began the year as the starting left tackle since Andrew Thomas was not ready. Hudson was benched during Week 2 after allowing a sack and committing four penalties, including two false starts and two unnecessary roughness calls on the opening drive, which cost them 40 yards, and played one snap for the rest of the season. Hudson allowed seven pressures, four hurries, two quarterback hits, and one sack across 85 snaps.

The Giants released him the first week of March.
