The Washington Commanders currently hold the No. 7 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft next month.
With mock draft season in full effect, the Commanders have been linked to quite a few different options with their first-round pick. Those predictions have included both offense and defense, although there is one name that has been connected more than others.
Notre Dame standout running back Jeremiyah Love has been heavily linked to Washington.
Jayden Daniels is one of the top up-and-coming quarterbacks in the NFL. Pairing him long-term with an elite running back like Love would take the offense to another level.
That being said, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has now weighed in on the potential Commanders and Love fit.
Adam Schefter Weighs in on Commanders, Jeremiyah Love Connection
During an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Schefter shared his opinion on where Love could end up going in the 2026 draft.
“Jeremiyah Love is a top ten pick,” Schefter said. “I don’t see him going to the Titans or the Giants right now. A place that makes sense to me would be the Washington Commanders.”
Love was an absolute menace against opposing defenses during his time with the Fighting Irish. He was one of the top offensive playmakers in the country.
Last season, the 6-foot-0 and 214-pound running back carried the football 199 times for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns. Back in 2024, he racked up 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries.
Fans quickly took to the comments to share their reactions to Schefter’s opinion.
“Washington is the floor, Tennessee is the ceiling,” one wrote.
Another fan chimed in, “Commanders didn’t sign 2 RBs in addition to Bill just to draft an RB with the 7th pick.”
“Commanders currently makes the most sense to me. I could see him falling to 14 as well,” a third comment read.
What Kind of NFL Player Can Jeremiyah Love Become?
On the outside looking in, Love looks to be the part of a workhorse NFL running back. He has the build to be a long-term threat and has the speed and playmaking ability to be elite.
NFL.com has revealed a Jahmyr Gibbs comparison for Love. As the Detroit Lions‘ rising star running back becomes one of the most dangerous in the league as his position, the comparison is a ringing endorsement for Love.
Just two short years ago, the Commanders were in the NFC Championship Game. They missed the playoffs last season, but there is no question that they are close to being a contender once again.
Taking pressure off of Daniels and the passing game should be a priority. There would be no better way to do that than by bringing in an elite running game.
Love would be an instant upgrade in the backfield for Washington. If he’s available with the No. 7 overall pick next month, it would not be surprising to see the Commanders take him. Schefter clearly thinks the fit makes sense.
