Man United are reportedly keen on signing an Arsenal star in the summer transfer window.
If United do qualify for the Champions League, they will be desperate to bring in quality players in the summer who can add more depth, but also add Champions League experience and high-potential youngsters.
Man United plot move for Myles Lewis-Skelly
Fresh reports have suggested that Man United want to upgrade at left-back, which would make sense considering that Luke Shaw has seen a lot of injury troubles in the past few years. Furthermore, he is now 30 years old, and his contract at United is due to expire at the end of next season.
According to TeamTalk, Man United are plotting a surprise move for Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has lost his starting role at the Emirates to the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie.
Lewis-Skelly has made just 14 Premier League appearances this season, which is a surprise considering that last year, he became a key player for the Gunners. The 19-year-old has also lost his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, and so could leave in the summer.
It is understood that Arsenal would be willing to loan Lewis-Skelly out, but a sale hasn’t been discussed. However, if United were to come in with an attractive enough offer, it could tempt the Gunners to sell the English defender.
Former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher believes that Lewis-Skelly remains a top-class left-back. He said earlier in the season, after a Champions League game, that he is ‘spectacular’. Carragher said on TNT Sports: “He’s spectacular at left-back… he looks like almost one of the best players in the Arsenal team.”
Do Man United need a left-back?
The simple answer is yes. Before the season, you would have thought maybe not, considering that the Red Devils have Luke Shaw, who can start at left-back, and Patrick Dorgu, who can be his backup.
However, when Carrick came in, he played Dorgu as an attacking winger, and he transformed into a new player. Dorgu put in two player-of-the-match performances against Arsenal and Man City, before suffering an injury in January, which all but ended his season.
With Dorgu becoming more of an attacker, Man United could do with a new left-back who can be an alternative and compete with Shaw for the starting role at Old Trafford.
