NBC's Chris Simms Draws Blunt Criticism for Controversial NFL Draft Take

Chris Simms isn’t afraid to let his opinion be known.

The former quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, and Denver Broncos has quickly adopted a role as a contrarian in the NFL Draft space over the past few years.

When others zig, Simms loves to zag and will double down on his opinions regardless of what others might think.

In 2024, he infamously ranked Drake Maye the sixth-best quarterback of the NFL Draft class, behind the likes of J.J. McCarthy. Two years later, Maye just played in the Super Bowl and was runner-up for league MVP, while McCarthy might be on his way out of Minnesota if he doesn’t show any improvement next campaign.

Simms, though, continues his yearly tradition of ranking the best players at each major positional group heading into the NFL Draft, and he recently did so with wide receivers.

To say social media and the internet at large disagreed with Simms would be a massive understatement.

While it’s widely agreed upon by pundits and fans alike that the top trio of wideouts going into April are Ohio State’s Carnell Tate, USC’s Makai Lemon, and Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson, Simmons doesn’t believe any of those three are the best receiver prospect.

Instead, Simms believes Denzel Boston of Washington is the best wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft, who is consensually a late-first-round pick.

Makai Lemon, who was named college football’s best wide receiver in 2025, didn’t even make Simms’ top five ranking.

Simms stands by his rankings, and per usual, the fans will stand by theirs. The former NFL QB will hope that his wideout picks turn out better than his projection of Drake Maye.
