The San Francisco 49ers needed to address their interior offensive line, particularly at left guard, as multiple players either departed or are testing free agency. Spencer Burford joined the Las Vegas Raiders, and Ben Bartch remains a free agent. Connor Colby is the projected starting left guard after starting six games as a rookie and struggling, which led to him losing the job. Meanwhile, the 49ers brought in Brett Toth, who is expected to compete for the starting role while also serving as the backup center.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the 49ers have signed Robert Jones to a contract after working out with the team earlier on Monday. He is capable of playing both guard positions, having logged 1,736 snaps at left guard and 350 at right guard, along with 64 at right tackle, across 32 career starts, including the playoffs throughout his first four seasons. Jones is now healthy after missing the entire 2025 season due to injury.

The Miami Dolphins re-signed Robert Jones to a one-year, $2 million contract in 2024. He won the starting left guard job and, for the first time in his NFL career, started every game. Jones allowed 28 pressures and five sacks across 18 games, including 18 starts, accounting for 1,080 offensive snaps.
The Dallas Cowboys signed Robert Jones to a one-year, $4.75 million contract last March. He competed for the starting right guard job but suffered a broken bone in his neck on the first day of padded practice that did not require surgery. The Cowboys placed him on season-ending injured reserve in August.
