Doc Rivers explains Bucks waiving Cam Thomas

The Bucks waived Thomas after signing the disgruntled guard out of his Brooklyn tenure following the post-trade deadline.

On behalf of the Milwaukee Bucks organization, Doc Rivers addressed the team's waiving of Cam Thomas on Monday.

The Bucks head coach offered his thoughts about the front office's unforeseen decision to move on from Thomas just over a month after their signing.

"Yeah, it was a tough one, honestly," Rivers told reporters ahead of their road matchup against the LA Clippers. "You know, we ran out of bodies. And at the end of the day, there were guys you had to make a decision on. I thought Cam was really good overall. And it may be somebody we revisit. Just where we're at right now, you know, not really in the [playoff] hunt, as when we signed him.

"But we thought it was the right thing to do for the rest of the guys right now."

The combo guard excelled in his first couple of games for Milwaukee, which prompted Rivers to compare him to both Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams, two of the game's greatest sixth men that he coached in the past.

Yet eventually, Thomas found struggles and inconsistencies. Even his addition couldn't help the Bucks save their season.

In 18 games for Milwaukee, he averaged 10.7 points in 43.1 percent shooting with 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists across 16.6 minutes.

Now a free agent, Thomas is now at a crossroads on where he will take his young career.

As for the Bucks, it appears that they are now waiving the white flag and will embrace their first playoff exclusion in 10 years.

"There were things that we don't need to talk about, right? That's not, like I said before, that's where, you know, as a coach, you have to make decisions on what's the best thing for the team at that time," Rivers responded when asked about Thomas' declining role and minutes leading to waiving.

"People don't understand that. They start talking about other stuff, you know? And that's not for anyone to know."
