“Nice ending” – Defender drops big hint he’s leaving Manchester City after cup win

Manchester City’s Nathan Ake

Manchester City star Nathan Aké is unsure whether he will be at the Premier League side after this season.

The Netherlands international arrived at the Etihad from AFC Bournemouth in 2020 and has played 172 matches for Manchester City.

Since joining Pep Guardiola’s side, he’s regularly struggled with hamstring injuries. That was the case especially until last season.

Aké isn’t facing any injury problem this season but hasn’t enjoyed regular minutes. He’s played 1,345 minutes from 27 matches and that includes four starts in the league and six more in the EFL Cup.

The centre-back’s Premier League stats per game for this season are given below.

Despite the restricted role with Manchester City, the 31-year-old made it Ronald Koeman’s squad for all international breaks this season. He is now with the Dutch squad, and that gave Algemeen Dagblad an opportunity to chat with him.

Aké unsure of Manchester City future

The former Cherries man joins the Netherlands squad after winning the EFL Cup with the Citizens. He played the full 90 minutes as they beat Arsenal 2-0 in the final at Wembley on Sunday

After the match, he embraced Guardiola, and Nathan Aké has now revealed what the Manchester City manager told him.

“He said he was super proud of me. He said he was super proud of me. And that I played a top match. We have been through so much together in the last six years,” he said.

Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that Barcelona are lining up a move for the Dutchman in the next window.

His contract expires in 2027, and AD insist ‘everything points to’ him leaving the English club in the summer.

When asked about his future beyond this season, Aké explained: “I have no idea, but winning the Carabao would certainly be a nice ending.”

On Manchester City’s season so far, he added: “Due to the arrival of many new players, things went more ‘up and down’ this season. We had to get to know each other, feel comfortable in a different playing style, and get used to a new coach [Pepijn Lijnder]. Things are starting to click now, although we need to become more consistent.”
