In the NBA, birthdays can occasionally mean more than just cake and candles. They can highlight relationships built over years in the league, create lighthearted moments, and bring back memories. For Kyrie Irving and Jason Kidd, that is exactly the case.
Before Mavericks' loss to the Warriors, Kidd spoke in a press conference. Kidd reflected on the unique coincidence that he and his star guard share the same birthday, March 23. He admitted that it's something he enjoys joking about with Irving even after years of working together.

"For us to share this day, the 23rd, is pretty cool," Kidd said. "I always joke with him that he was older." Beyond the playful jokes, however, Kidd emphasized how much he values Irving's growth as both a player and a person. "To see his growth, on and off the floor, is special and it means a lot to me," he added.
This season, however, that connection has also been tested by circumstances. Irving has missed a significant stretch of games due to injury, leaving a noticeable gap in the Mavericks' lineup. Kidd acknowledged the impact his absence has had on the team. "I told him we missed him a lot this year," Kidd said.
Even while sidelined, Irving has continued to influence the team in other ways. Kidd noted that the veteran guard has taken on a mentorship role with Cooper Flagg and other younger players on the roster. According to Kidd, the 34-year-old has helped the younger players navigate the NBA lifestyle and demanding schedule.
Kidd may find it amusing that they share the same birthday, but their bond goes deeper than that. Despite the 19-year age difference, their relationship has only grown stronger. For Kidd, the real significance lies in watching Irving evolve. But not just as a star, rather as a leader guiding the next generation in Dallas.
