Chiefs, Lions could have blockbuster trade opportunity after new 49ers rumor

The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions are two teams that could be in the market for a left tackle.

Well, we know the Lions definitely are after the team released Taylor Decker, who requested he be cut after the two sides failed to agree on a pay cut.

In Kansas City, the release of Jawaan Taylor leaves a question mark at right tackle and as of right now the Chiefs are looking at a potential starting duo of Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore.

One player both teams should be keeping an eye on is San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, who could hit the trade block at some point this offseason.

Trent Williams trade rumor

According to Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom, the Niners and Williams remain far apart in talks to redo his contract, which carries a massive cap hit in 2026.

While reports have suggested a deal will get done at some point and Williams won't get traded, La Canfora is pushing back, saying that is anything but a certainty and a trade could indeed happen.

"(While) some media reports are couching the situation as nothing to see here, and indicate San Francisco will simply rework his contract, we continue to hear that talks between the sides have gone nowhere, and a trade or trade request is hardly out of the question," La Canfora reported.

Despite being 37 years old (38 in July), Williams is still arguably the best left tackle in the sport.

According to Pro Football Focus, he ranked 12th in pass-blocking grade (79.9) and second in run-blocking grade (92.8) in 2025. He would provide a massive upgrade for just about any team he lands with if traded.

The Chiefs in particular have been linked to Williams, with La Canfora reporting Kansas City is "seen by many around the league as the team most eager to land him."

The 49ers are going to do whatever they can to try and keep Williams in San Fran, but clearly it would be premature to rule out a trade at this point.
