Jared McCain stepped back into Philadelphia with a different jersey, but the emotions never left. The young guard returned for the first time as a visitor Monday night, and the moment carried weight long before tipoff.
“It’s definitely different,” McCain said after shootaround. “Even just arriving here, it was very weird going to the hotel and being on the opposing side. I’m happy to be back. Very nostalgic feeling.”
The Oklahoma City Thunder guard did not hide how much the day meant. After spending over a season with the Sixers, McCain admitted the trade initially caught him off guard. He described feeling confused when he first heard the news, unsure of what came next.
“When [Daryl Morey] first told me, I didn’t even really understand what team he sent me to,” McCain said. “I heard ‘traded’ and that was kind of it.”
Once reality settled in, his perspective shifted quickly. Joining the defending champions brought a mix of pressure and opportunity.
“It was one of those moments where you’re almost like, ‘OK, they won a championship… why do you want me?’” McCain said. “But they’ve been nothing but welcoming. The vibes are amazing.”

When McCain checked into the game, the Philadelphia crowd responded with a standing ovation, Sixers Wire reports. The reception showed how much he meant during his time with the Sixers, even after the midseason move.

McCain scored 13 points and knocked down three shots from beyond the arc in Oklahoma City’s 123-103 win. Two of those makes came almost immediately, helping him settle into a game that carried clear emotional weight.
“It was really awesome,” McCain said. “Even just waking up this morning, there’s a lot of anxiety… nerves, excitement. I knew I just had to control what I can control.”
As the game unfolded, those nerves faded.
“Whenever I get out there, the emotions kind of go away,” he added. “But it definitely was tough going out there, especially against all my old teammates.”

McCain’s performance reflected more than just a solid stat line. It showed growth since the trade that reshaped his season.
Through limited minutes, he has carved out a role with efficiency, especially from deep. His shooting has given Oklahoma City another reliable option, and his comfort within the system continues to build.

“So hitting those two 3s, a little bit emotion came out there for sure,” McCain said. “Just excitement and just blessed to have the opportunity to play basketball again.”
He even shared a few words with Drummond after the shot, a small but telling sign of how locked in he felt.
Still, the night belonged to more than just competition. Between the ovation, the early buckets, and the postgame reflection, McCain’s return felt like a full-circle moment.
