Rooney Says Man City Star With“Big Future”May Have No Choice But“To Move”Away From The Etihad

Former Man Utd and England striker Wayne Rooney believes James Trafford will have “to move” from Man City to realise his full potential.

The 23-year-old started the Carabao Cup final and kept a clean sheet against Arsenal, but he has struggled for regular game time due to the presence of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Asked for his opinion on Trafford, Rooney said the goalkeeper has to get more minutes:

“We’ve all known the potential he has, and he’s got a big future in front of him, but I still haven’t seen enough of him at the top level to fully judge him. I think it’s going to be difficult now, obviously, with Donnarumma at Man City.”

“It looks like probably the only way for him to get that experience and go and play is to move club. Unless he’s really patient and waits around.”

Guardiola has had his say on Trafford’s future

Prior to the win over Arsenal, manager Pep Guardiola was asked to comment on Trafford’s future, following remarks from the player that he had not expected to be Donnarumma’s understudy.

Guradiola was pretty blunt with his response, saying that Trafford would have to make a decision on his future at the end of the season.

The Man City keeper will have suitors

Newcastle were very keen on recruiting Trafford prior to the Citizens re-signing the keeper back in the summer.

The Magpies are believed to be seeking a replacement for Nick Pope, but there are suggestions that their interest in Trafford has subsequently cooled.

Chelsea have also been linked with the former England youth international, and Glen Johnson recently commented that the Blues may consider a move for him after struggling to fill the number one spot.
