While Michael Penix Jr. recovers from his ACL injury, this signing will provide veteran leadership in the quarterback room. The 34-year-old has been primarily a backup since entering the NFL.
Siemian Has Been Journeyman Quarterback in NFL
Trevor Siemian is a former second round pick out of Northwestern University. He was drafted to the Denver Broncos in 2015.
Siemian spent last season on the Tennessee Titans practice squad. He has also played for the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears.
“The former seventh-round pick has appeared in 40 games (33 starts) since entering the league with the Denver Broncos in 2015. Siemian has passed for 7,751 yards, 44 touchdowns and 32 interceptions over seven seasons.” Matt Urben wrote in a Falcons Wire article.
While at Northwestern University, Siemian threw for 5,931 total yards and 27 touchdowns. Though these numbers were somewhat impressive, he also threw 24 interceptions in his college career. In the NFL, Siemian is 15-18 as a starter.
Siemian Adds to Quarterback Competition in Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons now have three quarterbacks on their squad to compete for the starting position. The Atlanta Falcons officially signed Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year contract worth up to $1.3 million on March 13th. The move came after the Miami Dolphins released the 28-year-old after the 2025 season.
Tagovailoa expressed how signing with the Atlanta Falcons was a great opportunity for him.
“Based off of what happened last year, I knew I needed to play better, but I think this is a great opportunity to be able to come here and get a good reset,” Tagovailoa is quoted as saying to AtlantaFalcons.com. “I want to thank the Blank family. I want to thank Arthur (Blank). I want to thank Coach (Kevin) Stefanski. I want to thank the organization for allowing me this opportunity. I am excited.”
Though Tagovailoa is getting a fresh start in Atlanta, he has not been the most available quarterback in years past. Michael Penix Jr. has struggled to stay on the field as well. Siemian’s signing could be security blanket in case the other two quarterbacks are not available.
Penix Jr. entered the 2025 season as the starter for the Atlanta Falcons. Before Michael Penix Jr. went down, he completed 60.1 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,982 yards during the 2025 season. He had nine total touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Tagovailoa says he is looking forward to getting to work and compete for the starting position.
“If there’s no competition, I don’t think anyone’s getting better, in aspect of the field of work you’re in,” Tagovailoa said in the Atlanta Falcons article. “I am excited to be able to compete against [Penix], to compete with him, to be able to get to know my teammates on a personal level, knowing them from the outside in. We have a lot of good football players on this team, so I’m excited to get to play with these guys and get the chance to throw the ball around, conversate with them. I think it’s going to be great.”
