Jets Interested in Two Day-Three Quarterbacks in NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is fast approaching. At this point, front offices are continuously examining the class to address their roster needs. While many teams have improved since the start of the offseason, more work is needed. For the Jets, it’s expected to use the majority of their first four draft picks on defense & wide receiver. Even though Geno Smith will be the team’s next starting quarterback, New York still needs a quality backup. It’s expected they will still look for a veteran backup. However, reports show New York is doing research on two quarterbacks who will be available on day three of the Draft. Who are they, and how will they fit in New York’s plans? Let’s examine them.

Jets Interested in Two-Day-Three Quarterbacks in NFL Draft

After winning only three games last season, major changes were necessary to help improve the team. Thus far, it’s been a productive offseason in New York. Across all three levels, general manager Darren Mougey addressed the defense. In addition, the reunion between Geno Smith and New York gives the Jets an upgrade at quarterback. However, this progress shouldn’t neglect the importance of the NFL Draft. With four picks in the first two rounds, New York has the tools needed to add some major young talent. With four picks within the top 45, New York can add some impressive long-term pieces. However, don’t expect them to use one of those first picks on a quarterback.

Despite projected mock drafts pairing them, it’s unlikely New York selects Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. While Simpson projects to be a talented quarterback, New York has too many needs to address before picking a quarterback this early. One major need remains at edge rusher. Which New York will address as soon as the second overall pick? Not to mention the benefit of selecting a wide receiver early. Instead, New York could select a quarterback as soon as the fourth round. If so, two names have emerged early.

The Jets are considering either Miami quarterback Carson Beck & Penn State quarterback Drew Allar

As of now, NFL teams are moving across the country to attend Pro Days. These workouts are the last chance to see prospects perform & test on the field. Fortunately for New York, the contingency of Aaron Glenn, Darren Mougey, and new offensive coordinator Frank Reich has taken the initiative to attend these workouts together. This past week, the Jets attended Penn State’s pro day. Among the names of interest, the one that stood out the most was quarterback Drew Allar. In fact, the Jets invited Allar to a private workout during one of their top-30 visits.

The #Jets had a number of Penn State players at the facility for private workouts this weekend, with the pro day circuit set to begin, per sources.

The starting quarterback over the last two years, Allar became the starting quarterback at Penn State in 2023. Replacing longtime starter Sean Clifford, the 6’5″, 235 lbs was a talented pocket passer. At the end of his career, Allar finished 26-9 as a starter. Over the last three years as the starter, Allar had 68 total touchdowns. Before the season, Allar was a projected late first-round pick. Unfortunately, a broken ankle suffered against Northwestern ended both his season & collegiate career in mid October. Despite the injury, Allar has size, arm strength, and the ability to extend the pocket just enough to draw interest. While there are mechanical issues and concerns with processing, the chance to work with an established name like Reich can aid his development. Plus, playing in New York would reunite him with former left tackle & 2024 first-round pick Olu Fashanu.

Has Carson Beck shown enough to be drafted early?

After four years at Georgia, quarterback Carson Beck transferred to Miami. After watching Stetson Bennett lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back National Championships, Beck won the starting job in 2023. With Beck under center, Georgia finished 24-3 as their starter. Unfortunately, Beck suffered a torn UCL in an SEC Championship game victory over Texas. After getting surgery, Beck decided to transfer to Miami shortly after to work with offensive-minded head coach Mario Cristobal. The result led to success for both Beck and Miami as a whole. As a whole, Beck showed the UCL injury didn’t limit his game, by throwing a career high 30 touchdowns while completing over 72% of his passes. With Beck’s experience before the season, he helped Miami reach the National Championship game before losing to Indiana.

Busy week ahead for Jets GM Darren Mougey. Scheduled to meet tonight with Miami QB Carson Beck, then will attend U of Miami pro day tomorrow. Mougey and Aaron Glenn scheduled to attend Ohio State pro day on Wednesday, per sources. Obviously, many NFL prospects at both schools.…

As a prospect, Beck possesses prototypical size at 6’5″, 235lbs. An experienced starter, Beck has started in over 40 games, well over the 30-game starter rule coined by Bill Parcells. Beck has shown solid progression in reads and accuracy on the field. However, there are concerns with breakdowns when faced with pressure. While he performed well, scouts are concerned that velocity & throw speed diminished from Georgia levels. However, there remains a major interest in Beck due to the leadership & maturity he displayed this season. In fact, Darren Mougey met with Carson Beck just before Miami’s Pro Day. Whether it’s Drew Allar or Carson Beck, either could be a solid development project for the NY Jets draft class.
