Lavonte David was a second-round selection for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft. He played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in college. David spent his entire 14-year NFL career with the Buccaneers.

On Tuesday, David decided to announce his retirement from the NFL. This is the second franchise icon that Tampa Bay has lost to its roster this offseason. They also lost wide receiver Mike Evans to the San Francisco 49ers in free agency on a three-year deal. David is 36 years old and it was probably time for him to hang it up anyways.

There are a lot of Buccaneers fans who are no doubt emotional over the David retirement announcement. This is what some Tampa Bay fans had to say about it on Twitter:

Have a good retirement, you won’t be missed by the Falcons, but we appreciate what you did for the game.

Lavonte David spending his entire career with 1 franchise in this era of the NFL is something that almost never happens anymore. retiring as a Buccaneer after everything he gave to that organisation is the kind of loyalty the sport does not see enough of and the legacy he leaves…

There is no doubt that Tampa Bay is going to need to find a new leader on its defense this offseason. With David and Evans gone now, it appears as if the Buccaneers maybe one step closer to entering a rebuild rather than being contenders in the NFC. They did finish 8-9 last season record wise and missed the playoffs. The glory days of this franchise might appear to be over for now.
During the 2025 NFL season with the Buccaneers, he recorded 114 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and three pass deflections. There is a good chance that he represents Tampa Bay in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio down the road. The only question left for him is will he be a first ballot hall of famer or not? Not only will David be missed on the field, but he will also be missed off the field in the Tampa Bay, Florida community big time.
