Lavonte David, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ franchise linebacker and one of the most decorated players in team history, officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old made it known at a news conference held at One Buc Place, ending a career that began when Tampa Bay selected him in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Nebraska.
David spent every one of his 14 professional seasons with the Buccaneers, never playing a regular-season snap for any other franchise.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed on X:
“After 14 NFL seasons, Buccaneers LB Lavonte David announced his retirement.” The decision closes a chapter that Tampa Bay fans had been bracing for since the offseason began.
How David Built One of the Most Productive Linebacker Careers in Buccaneers History
David’s numbers do not need context to be impressive. He finished with 1,714 career tackles, matching the franchise record set by Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks.
He also recorded 177 tackles for loss, more than any player in Buccaneers history, along with 33 forced fumbles and 21 fumble recoveries.

David is a three-time All-Pro and a Super Bowl LV champion. He started all 215 games he appeared in during his career, never missing a start due to injury.
His production carried through some lean years in Tampa Bay. Long before Tom Brady arrived and the franchise finally broke through in February 2021, David was the constant that the organization’s defense was built around.
His career in Tampa Bay spanned five head coaches and as many defensive coordinators. He adapted to multiple schemes without a significant drop in production.
Former and current teammates gathered at One Buc Place to be present when David made the announcement official.
What David’s Retirement Means for Tampa Bay’s Defense and His Hall of Fame Case
The Buccaneers have already acted on the assumption that David would not return, the team signed inside linebackers Alex Anzalone and Christian Rozeboom in recent days to rebuild the position.
Finding someone who produces like David did is not realistic. Rozeboom started 15 games for the Carolina Panthers last season and offers steady play, but this is, in a way, a rebuild, not a replacement.

Tampa Bay’s NFL Draft war room contains a silhouette on the wall representing the type of player the organization aims to bring in. GM Jason Licht has long identified that figure as Lavonte David.
David also ran the Lavonte David Foundation throughout his career, working to help children from financially challenged backgrounds gain access to education. That work is unlikely to end with his playing days.
The Hall of Fame conversation will follow David into retirement. CBS Sports ranks him as the seventh-leading tackler in NFL history.
