Bills urged to trade for stud defensive tackle for Super Bowl tilt

One of the Buffalo Bills' biggest weaknesses last season was how the defense was gashed in the run game under Sean McDermott.

The Bills gave up, on average, 133.6 rushing yards per game (ranked 28th) as the defense was routinely pushed around.

So, it would make sense under the new coordinator, Jim Leonhard, to address that need.

Well, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton has offered a solution for Buffalo -- trade for D.J. Jones.

“New Bills head coach Joe Brady hired defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, who was the defensive pass game coordinator on the Denver Broncos' staff under Sean Payton over the last two years,” Moton wrote. “He may be able to convince the Bills that D.J. Jones is worth acquiring to strengthen the run defense.

“In Buffalo, Jones could play in an expanded role as the leader of a young interior group that shows a little more resistance against ground attacks.”

Bills facing huge 2026 season

Buffalo fired McDermott because of the repeated playoff failures, so Joe Brady walks into his first NFL head coaching role with pressure from Day 1.

Joe won't get an easing-in period like most first-time head coaches; he will be expected to at the very least maintain what McDermott did. And that's 10+ win seasons and make the playoffs.

With some nice additions in free agency in D.J. Moore and Bradley Chubb, the Bills have addressed two key needs as they gear up for another tilt at the Super Bowl.

The addition of Jones could be a shrewd addition for a unit that was horrible against the run in 2025, and who knows, it might just be the sort of move to bring everything together for Leonhard's defense.
