Tennessee Titans: Host Elite First-Team All-American edge Rusher

The Tennessee Titans could still address the defensive end/EDGE rusher position this offseason. Former New York Jets Pro Bowler Jermaine Johnson II is entering a contract year, while projected starter Femi Oladejo is recovering from a fractured leg that kept him out of the final 11 games of his rookie season. Arden Key signing with the Indianapolis Colts weakened their depth as Jihad Ward remains unsigned.

According to Zach Lyons, Miami Hurricanes’ elite pass rusher Rueben Bain Jr. confirmed during an interview with CBS Sports that he will visit with the Titans on a pre-draft visit. The All-American standout fits Robert Saleh’s scheme because he offers positional versatility with his 6-foot-3, 265-pound frame, allowing him to line up inside as an interior defensive lineman and outside as an EDGE rusher, while also being a strong run defender and explosive pass rusher. However, one concern is Bain’s 30 7/8-inch arms, which are below the ideal 33 inches. Not one EDGE rusher with sub-31-inch arms has ever been drafted in the first round over the past two decades, per ESPN.

Rueben Bain Jr. put together a breakout junior campaign, setting career highs while earning First-Team All-American and ACC honors, winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the Ted Hendricks Award for best defensive lineman, and helping lead Miami to a National Championship appearance. He recorded 83 pressures, 68 hurries, 9.5 sacks, and one forced fumble across 16 games, along with 54 tackles, 15.5 TFLs, 23 run stops, and one interception. Bain wrapped up his three-year tenure, totaling 121 tackles, 33.5 TFLs, 156 pressures, 20.5 sacks, one interception, and four forced fumbles across 38 games.

“Note taker, grudge holder and block destructor with a compact frame and defensive tackle play strength. Bain is ill-tempered with his take-ons, hitting blockers with heavy hand strikes. He plays through tight ends and can anchor against tackles and double teams.

“However, his lack of length can lead to him being smothered if he doesn’t land the first strike. He can bend and flip his hips at the top of the rush, swipe away punches and generate a strong bull rush.

“His playoff run showed an ability to generate quick wins if tackles are passive in setting to him. He can rush off the edge or mismatch guards as a sub-package rusher. Bain’s explosive power and toughness should translate, giving him a high floor as an NFL starter.

He projects him as a Year 1 starter.
