As the NBA Board of Governors is about to decide on a potential expansion, the city of Seattle affirmed its commitment to having a professional basketball team.
The entire Seattle can't wait to see the NBA expansion finally materialize, bringing back the SuperSonics franchise once and for all.
As she and the members of the Seattle City Council have passed a resolution to nurture basketball in the city, Seattle mayor Katie Wilson made a major statement on Tuesday expressing the community's support for the Sonics' revival.
"Seattle is ready to welcome the Sonics home,” Wilson said. “We never stopped being a basketball city, and the fans have never given up. You see it in our parks, in our schools, in packed gyms in every neighborhood, and in our Seattle Storm championships. We built a world-class arena. We have a strong economy and a dedicated workforce.
"We are prepared, we are united, and we are ready for the next chapter of our Sonics."
It was already announced that the NBA Board of Governors is set to meet this week about several league matters, including a vote on potential expansion.
Along with Las Vegas, Seattle is mainly being favored as a potential city that will be covered by expansion.
The SuperSonics were one of the most iconic, storied teams in the league. Winning the NBA championship in 1979, it served as the home of several legends of the game like Gary Payton, Lenny Wilkens, Shawn Kemp, Ray Allen and Kevin Durant.
But following public funding disputes on a new arena, the franchise was relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma City by owner Clay Bennett and subsequently underwent full rebranding to OKC Thunder.
Should Seattle get granted its own NBA team again, it was already revealed that the Thunder organization will fully surrender the SuperSonics' history.
Everyone in the NBA can only wait and see if an NBA expansion will finally happen, giving Seattle fans something to celebrate upon the return of their beloved Sonics team.
