The Rams could get some quarterback depth

Coming off an MVP win, Matthew Stafford will return for his 18th season in the NFL and his 6th season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Stafford will continue to be the starter for the team, but the Rams lack a true backup on the roster after two weeks of free agency.

With the start of the 2026 season approaching, LA needs to find a quality backup if its MVP winner were to go down.

Trade Idea for $12.8 Million Backup

Matthew Stafford was dealing with a back injury before the start of the 2025 season that could have prevented the quarterback from playing in the first few weeks of the season. While the MVP did play, there was talk about who would be the option if Stafford were to be out long-term.

With the 2026 season, the issue remains as to who will be the long-term option if Stafford goes out with an injury.

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton throws the idea that the Los Angeles Rams should trade for Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills, who will upgrade the backup QB spot.

“Matthew Stafford is entering his age-38 season. Though he’s been mostly healthy over the previous three terms, the wear and tear on his body could take a toll on him following a full 17-game campaign,” Moton wrote. “The Rams haven’t re-signed Jimmy Garoppolo, and Stetson Bennett IV hasn’t developed much in a third-string role. If Stafford misses time, Los Angeles would need a veteran to keep its offense steady.”

“General manager Les Snead should call the Houston Texans to inquire about Davis Mills, who went 3-0 as a fill-in starter for C.J. Stroud last season… Of course, Houston values Mills’ ability to lead its offense in case Stroud gets banged up again, but the 27-year-old is entering a contract year. The Texans may be willing to deal him now, before he hits free agency and they ramp up talks for Stroud’s extension next offseason.”

In the three games Mills was behind the center, he logged 915 passing yards and 5 touchdowns, while getting 60 yards and a touchdown with his legs.

Mills started 26 games in his first two seasons in the league, accruing 5,782 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes — he also threw 25 interceptions.

With the starting experience, Davis Mills could be the next man up after Matthew Stafford if the Rams were to pull a trade for the Stanford Cardinal. Mills would have an $8.125 million cap hit for next season.

Rams May Bring Back Jimmy G.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been the backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams for the last two seasons and could return for a third.

Head coach Sean McVay mentioned that he would “absolutely” want Jimmy G to return to the team.

“I love Jimmy. I would absolutely want him back… Jimmy’s a really good player and so we would love him back,” McVay said, via NBC Sports. “He’s been tremendous for the last couple of years. We’ve loved everything he’s about. You guys know how I feel about him when we’ve spoken about him and we would love him back.”

Jimmy G. understands the Rams’ offense and wouldn’t cost the team any draft picks, compared to Mills.
