Hugo Gonzalez Gets Real On 'Responsibility' Of Playing For Celtics

The Boston Celtics can be a tough team to play for. The fanbase expects winning, and while they can be your biggest supporter when you are succeeding, they can also be your worst enemy when you are losing. In his first year in the pros, though, Hugo Gonzalez has made getting accepted by the Celtics' rabid fanbase look pretty easy.

Expectations weren't particularly high for Gonzalez after he was selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but he's proceeded to play in 66 games for the C's this season. Known for his tenacity on both ends of the court, Gonzalez has made himself a favorite in the eyes of head coach Joe Mazzulla, and his appreciation of the history of the franchise he plays for may be playing a big role in his success.

"It's a lot. Obviously, from the standpoint of the franchise's won games and championships, that's something you can't take for granted," Gonzalez said. "Every time you look up and see the banners, it means something else. It's a responsibility, and you gotta take it."

Gonzalez isn't exactly putting up massive numbers for Boston (4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 0.6 APG, 46.7 FG%), but he makes winning plays, which is exactly what the team needs from one of its top bench players. At only 20 years old, Gonzalez is wise beyond his age, and that should only help him moving forward.

With a playoff run looming, Gonzalez seems set to help the Celtics author the next chapter of their storied history. Boston has to get there first, though, and it will look to take a big step towards holding onto the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night.
