3-Time NBA Slam Dunk champ Mac McClung etches name in G League history

Mac McClung put up 59 points on Tuesday night while playing for the Windy City Bulls, the G League affiliate of the Chicago Bulls. He added 10 assists and five rebounds in a win over the Birmingham Squadron.

McClung has piled up plenty of hardware in the G League. He has won MVP, Rookie of the Year, a league championship, and earned multiple All-G League First Team nods. But his chances in the NBA have stayed pretty thin.

The 59-point explosion pushed him past Renaldo Major’s career mark of 5,299 points. That makes McClung the G League’s all-time leading scorer when you combine the Tip-Off Tournament, regular season, and playoffs.

The NBA G League made it official after the game.

McClung’s path keeps demanding attention, and this latest milestone backs it up. He’s already won the Slam Dunk Contest three times, and now he is sitting on top of the G League’s scoring list.

That is two very different ways to prove he belongs somewhere in the mix. Since going undrafted in 2021, McClung has bounced around. He’s had short runs with the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and Indiana Pacers.

Most of those were two-way contracts or quick stops. The same thing is happening in Chicago, where he is still splitting time between leagues.

His NBA opportunities haven’t opened up much, but fans are watching. His 2023 Dunk Contest win got him noticed, and three straight titles have kept him in the conversation.

He is now mentioned alongside some of the best dunkers the event has ever had, and he has brought some energy back to a competition that needed it.
