Reflecting on Mo Salah’s early days at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea legend John Terry admitted he never saw the Egyptian reaching such heights, despite the greatness he now leaves behind at Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah’s time at Chelsea is often criticised having seen his meteoric rise. Arriving from FC Basel in January 2014 for approximately £11 million, the 21-year-old was a raw talent brought in by Jose Mourinho to bolster an attacking line already featuring Eden Hazard and Willian.
Despite his searing pace, Salah struggled to adapt to the physical demands of Mourinho’s system.
His time at Stamford Bridge was brief, spanning just 19 appearances and yielding only two goals, with one notably coming in a 6-0 rout of Arsenal. By early 2015, deemed unready for the first team, he was sent on loan to Fiorentina, a move that eventually led to a permanent transfer to Roma.
While critics often blame Mourinho for selling a future legend, it seems as if Salah wasn’t ready.

John Terry claims Mohamed Salah wasn’t ready for Chelsea
John Terry took to his personal TikTok account after hearing about Mohamed Salah’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
“It’s going to be a huge miss for not only Liverpool, but the Premier League as well.
“We had him at Chelsea many years ago when he was very young, very raw, but I didn’t see him going to these levels. But fair play to him.
“Unfortunately, back in the day, he wasn’t ready at Chelsea to come into that team. And like I said, he was very young. But he’s been incredible ever since.”

John Terry continued on Mohamed Salah
John Terry even compared Salah leaving Liverpool to his decision to stop playing for Chelsea, stating that it could be down to the drop in performances.
“He goes down as a Premier League great, as an all-time great as well in world football. The numbers he’s turned out are absolutely incredible, the goals and the return he gives as well.
“He’s going to be a big miss. So I think it’s important for him to go somewhere where he’s going to enjoy his football. He’s coming towards the end of his career. I think the biggest thing for any footballer when you call it a day or when you kind of pull back a little bit, you’re in control of that rather than the football club as well.
“So as a player, I knew that at the back end of my career, I got to go out and got a fantastic reception from the Chelsea fans. And I’m sure Mo’s going to get that at the end of the season from the Liverpool supporters. And I really hope he does because he’s an absolute legend and we can’t use that word lightly. So we wish him all the best.”
