Troy Deeney thinks Chelsea would'love'to sign two-time England centre-back from PL rivals

It is widely known that Chelsea’s problem positions are in goal, and at centre-back. While Todd Boehly is likely to scour the market, Troy Deeney has suggested an Everton player can be the solution.

Just look at Saturday’s defeat to David Moyes’ impressive Everton side. Robert Sanchez is arguably at fault for two goals, not off his line quickly enough for the first, and failing to save the second of Beto’s goals.

Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato were criticised by Alan Shearer, with the former allowing Beto to run off him on two occasions. It was lazy defending, and the Frenchman has received criticism for his recent form.

One of many problems on the pitch at the moment 🤦‍♂️

Chelsea have a whole host of centre-backs, with Axel Disasi and Aaron Anselmino still on the books and Levi Colwill due back. But even then, Chelsea need better. Troy Deeney has suggested a close-by option.

James Tarkowski can be the solution to Chelsea’s issues

According to Deeney, who is already known for his outlandish claims after entering the punditry world, believes Chelsea would “love” to have a player like two-time England defender, 33-year-old Tarkowski.

There is no doubt that Chelsea need more experience in the middle of their defence, but it feels unlikely that the Blues would ever move for a player of Tarkowski’s calibre or age. The former striker said:

“It was another solid performance from the Everton defender. He showed his experience and control, and was always where he needed to be. He made those tackles when needed,” Deeney told his BBC column.

“More importantly was a calming presence in their backline. How Chelsea would love a centre-back with that kind of gumption, especially given the shaky defending they have shown at times,” Deeney added.

What centre-backs have been linked with a move to Chelsea…

Scott Minto has ordered Chelsea to sign a “world-class” centre-back this summer, and he’s not wrong. It’s exactly what the Blues need. But does Boehly finally change and bring in a more-experienced option?

DISCUSS: Dayot Upamecano to Chelsea

A more experienced option than Jeremy Jacquet ✅

The likes of Kim Min-jae, Dayot Upamecano and players of that ilk have been touted. More recently, Lazio defender Mario Gila has also been linked with Chelsea. If there is any truth, perhaps it is a sign of change.

Ultimately, Chelsea need a centre-back that can take a grip of this defence and lead them into a new era under Liam Rosenior. Whether Chelsea’s hierarchy agree with that remains to be seen.
