Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addressed his Pro Football Hall of Fame snub this week.
A man of few words, North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick had only a brief response to his failure to make the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. But the six-time New England Patriots Super Bowl head coach did address his snub for the first time publicly before North Carolina’s first spring practice.
“No,” Belichick said Tuesday to a question on whether he had a comment on his snub.
“I’m focused on coaching this team and focused on getting Carolina football to the highest level I can,” he said, via The Fayetteville Observer’s Rodd Baxley.
“I focus about what I can do. Things that are out of my control, I don’t worry about.”
In his first year on the ballot, Belichick didn’t receive enough votes to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The other candidates in Belichick’s specific category were Robert Kraft, Ken Anderson, Roger Craig and L.C. Greenwood.
Distinct from the modern-era players, that category is called the contributor, coach and senior finalists.
The voting rules allow a minimum of one and maximum of three finalists in that group to receive enshrinement per year. Only Craig received enough votes to enter the Hall of Fame in 2026.
Bill Belichick Reacts Publicly to Hall of Fame Snub
The former Patriots head coach responded as most likely would have expected. Belichick very rarely gives an enticing quote to the media.
Very few, though, would blame Belichick if he openly showed more frustration over the snub. Dozens of former players, analysts and pundits came to his defense after he didn’t make the 2026 class.
I can’t be reading this right.
This has to be some knock-off Hall of Fame or something, it can’t be the actual NFL Hall of Fame.
There is not a single world whatsoever in which Bill Belichick should not be a First-Ballot Hall of Famer. https://t.co/OXhL1Sd4FM

In addition to winning six Super Bowls as New England’s head coach, Belichick captured two titles as a defensive coordinator. Those championships came with the New York Giants during the 1986 and 1990 seasons.
The Patriots won the Super Bowl during the 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018 campaigns under Belichick. They also won AFC championships in 2007, 2011 and 2017.
Including his tenure with the Cleveland Browns, Belichick amassed a 302-165 regular season record as an NFL head coach. Only Don Shula and George Halas have won more regular season games in league history.
With a 31-13 postseason record, Belichick holds the record for most playoff wins in NFL history.
Mike Florio Reacts to Bill Belichick’s Response
On Wednesday, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio argued the Hall of Fame snub should upset Belichick.
“Belichick should have been one of the three choices on all 50 ballots. Hell, if each voter would have been limited to only one person, it should have been Belichick, 50 times over,” wrote Florio.
But the NFL insider still found flaws to Belichick’s response to the media over his snub.
“Obviously, that’s not entirely true,” Florio wrote to Belichick saying he isn’t focused on the Hall of Fame. “When Belichick received word that he wasn’t getting in, he apparently didn’t just shrug and move on to the things he can control.
“Otherwise, word about his snub wouldn’t have gotten out before the new class of Hall of Famers was announced.”
ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported on January 27, before the Hall of Fame announcement, that Belichick didn’t receive enough votes for enshrinement.
The ESPN reporters wrote that when hearing about the voting results, Belichick privately said, “Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?”
Belichick should be a front runner to make the 2027 Hall of Fame class. In the minds of a lot of pundits, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has no choice but to induct Belichick to begin earning back some credibility.
In 2026, Belichick is entering his second season at North Carolina. He led the Tar Heels to a 4-8 record last season.
The Patriots ended Belichick’s tenure after the 2023 season. He failed to land another NFL head coaching job in the next two offseasons.
