The Minnesota Vikings decided to make a major quarterback change this offseason. After J.J. McCarthy failed to prove that he can be a long-term starter, the team pivoted to signing former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray.

Murray was given a one-year deal by the Vikings worth $1.3 million. He is widely expected to take over as the team’s starting quarterback for the upcoming 2026 season.

Along with the move to sign Murray, Minnesota also brought back veteran quarterback Carson Wentz. There is a very legitimate chance that McCarthy could find himself as the team’s No. 3 signal caller entering the 2026 NFL season.

With that being said, the Vikings have received a lot of praise for signing Murray. Taking a one-year flier on a quarterback who has shown flashes of star potential is a wise gamble. Murray could very well make Minnesota a serious contender in the NFC.

A new strong take has been provided about the Vikings’ decision to sign Murray.

Of course, no free agency signing is a sure thing. Murray could end up being a dud for the Vikings. Or, he could help the team get back to being one of the best teams in football like they were back in 2024.

While questions continue to swirl about the future of McCarthy and Murray, Minnesota has to feel much more comfortable. Heading into the 2026 season with McCarthy as the starter would have been a major concern.

Now, the team will have three quarterbacks vying for positioning on the depth chart. That situation should draw out the best in all of them.

What Does Kyler Murray Bring to the Vikings’ Offense?

Since being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray has had a rollercoaster career.

At times, he has looked the part of a franchise quarterback. In other times, he has not lived up to the hype and has also struggled with multiple different injury issues.

Murray has played in 87 games throughout his career so far. He has completed 67.1 percent of his pass attempts for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, while also running for 3,193 yards and 32 more touchdowns.

Having a legitimate dual-threat quarterback could open up othe offensive game plan for the Vikings and head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Only time will tell what the move to sign Murray means for Minnesota. However, it’s clear that most of the NFL media is a big fan of what he could bring to the Vikings.
