Chargers sign ex-Detroit Lions offensive lineman Kayode Awosika

The Chargers resolved some but perhaps not all of their issues on their offensive line by signing former Detroit Lions guard Kayode Awosika, a five-year veteran who appeared in 13 games this past season, including four starts. He spent four seasons with the Lions and one with the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s expected that Awosika, 27, will compete for the starting left guard spot during training camp along with Trevor Penning, a position left vacant when Zion Johnson signed a three-year, $49.5-million contract with the Cleveland Browns earlier this month. The Chargers also could seek help in the draft next month.

The Chargers’ offensive line underwent an overhaul since their 2025 season ended with an AFC wild-card loss Jan. 11 to the New England Patriots. They released right guard Mekhi Becton after one season of a two-year deal and signed ex-Miami Dolphins lineman Cole Strange to replace him.

In addition, the Chargers signed former Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz to replace Bradley Bozeman, who announced his retirement. They also re-signed Penning and tackle Trey Pipkins III, believing Pipkins will provide depth beyond standout tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater.

The Chargers won 11 games and advanced to the playoffs for the second consecutive season under Coach Jim Harbaugh despite losing Alt and Slater to season-ending injuries. Quarterback Justin Herbert was sacked a career-high 54 times while playing behind a makeshift line.
