After remaining quiet the last few days, the Los Angeles Chargers have made another free agent signing.

The Bolts have announced the signing of offensive lineman Kayode Awosika to the team. The terms of the deal have not been revealed.

Awosika was with the Detroit Lions in the 2025 season, playing in 13 games, starting 4. In his professional career, the offensive lineman has played in 50 games, starting 11. The lineman played in four playoff games in his career, starting 1.

Originally a tackle coming out of college, Awosika made the switch to guard in his second season in the NFL when he signed with Detroit.

The guard logged a 57.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus for his performance in the 2025 season. Kayode Awosika also registered a 52.5 pass block and 60.5 run block grade.

While Kayode Awosika’s numbers don’t speak out, the offensive lineman can become a versatile piece for new Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Awosika played at the left and right guard spots, also featured at right tackle, and played a snap at tight end. Both tackle spots won’t be open with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt returning to the lineup after they suffered season-ending injuries last season.

As of now, there is no clear answer on who will be the starting guards for the Bolts in the 2026 season. LA signed Cole Strange to a two-year deal to reunite with McDaniel, who he played for in the 2025 season with the Miami Dolphins, is currently the projected starter at the right guard opening.

The starter left guard spot is currently vacant after Zion Johnson signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns.

With the left guard spot up for grabs, Kayode Awosika can swoop in for the starting job with his experience. If not, the O-lineman could be a quality depth or rotational piece for the Bolts if injuries start to plague the team.

Fixing the Offensive Line Through the Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers hold the 22nd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and could be set up to select an immediate starter.

Most mock drafts have the Bolts select Penn State guard Ioane Vega in the first round and he would help the team’s offensive line woes.

CBS Sports draft analyst Ryan Wilson is one of those who believes that Vega will be the option for the Chargers in the upcoming draft.

“Ioane is one of the cleanest prospects in the class, and the Chargers have to get better along the interior offensive line,” Wilson wrote.

PFF graded Vega as the 13th-best guard in the country, earning an 87 pass block grade and 78.6 run block grade.

With a player of his talent, Ioane Vega could be a day 1 starter and help reduce the number of sacks Justin Herbert has been taking in his career with the Bolts.
