Will Russell Westbrook and Keegan Murray return this season?

The 2025-26 Sacramento Kings injury reports have been longer than a CVS receipt far too often. Plenty of their rotational pieces have suffered season-ending injuries, but will either Russell Westbrook or Keegan Murray return to the floor this season?

Domantas Sabonis (knee), Zach LaVine (finger), Hunter (eye), and Eubanks (thumb) have all been ruled out for the remainder of the year. Recently, Nique Clifford (foot), Precious Achiuwa (back), and Russell Westbrook (foot) have been included as well.

Keegan Murray had been nearing re-evaluation while working back from an ankle sprain. On Wednesday, the Kings provided an update on Murray and Westbrook.

Kings guard Russell Westbrook recently underwent MRI imaging on his right foot after missing the last two games due to foot soreness. MRI imaging was consistent with irritation in the joint of the first toe on his right foot. Westbrook will be listed as out and further updates will be provided as appropriate.

Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray, who sustained a left ankle sprain on Wednesday, February 25, versus the Houston Rockets, was re-evaluated today. Murray continues to make good progress in the return to play process and has been approved to begin contact basketball activities. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.

Sacramento Kings Press Release (March 25, 2026)

With just nine games left, and owners of a 19-54 record, which places them dead last in the Western Conference, will either of them play another game this season? Obviously, the Westbrook updates as out with no further timeline given makes that seem possible.

Kings’ head coach Doug Christie was clear about letting the future Hall of Famer “be Russ” and that’s shown in the numbers. Starting in 58 of his 64 games played this season, Westbrook is averaging 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 42.7 percent from the field. He’s also shooting 5.9 three-point attempts per game and converting 33.8 percent.

Despite continued links to the Kings, Westbrook signed late in the free agent cycle, remaining available until just before the regular season debut. Outplaying Dennis Schroder catapulted him into the starting unit, and an eventual Schroder trade elevated his importance.

When Scott Perry took over as general manager for Sacramento last offseason, he made their need for a starting point guard clear. As of right now, only Westbrook and Killian Hayes play that role. So, could they bring Westbrook back when he turns 28? If not, has he played his way into more leaguewide interest?

As for Murray, he came into the season with aspirations to win the Most Improved Player Award. Making a public goal like that is unlike Murray, which has led to some optimism about how his development could show in a larger role. That was never experienced as a preseason thumb injury kept him sidelined for the first 15 games.

After 19 games back, a left ankle sprain sidelined him once again. Murray said it was the first notable ankle injury he’s ever had. Eight and a half minutes into his fourth game back, he went to the locker room with what was later revealed to be a re-aggravation of that ankle.

As of now, the former fourth-overall pick has missed the last 13 games and appeared in a total of just 22 of their 73 showings. At this point, is there a reason to bring Murray back? Next year will be the beginning of a five-year, $140-million rookie extension he inked with Perry last offseason.

We’ll see how Perry, Christie, and the Kings decide to handle Murray. In the meantime, their trio of rookies (Nique Clifford, Dylan Cardwell, Maxime Raynaud), two-ways (Daeqwon Plowden, Patrick Baldwin Jr.), and other young players (Killian Hayes) will get extended repetitions in a low-risk environment. And, of course, DeMar DeRozan will continue to climb the all-time leaderboards.
