Amid rumors of stepping away and a potential UNC coaching gig, Donovan argued that his focus remains on helping the Bulls.
Before he and the Chicago Bulls faced the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, Billy Donovan addressed the ongoing rumors and speculation about his future within the franchise.

While he is fully mindful of recently being linked to the North Carolina's vacant head coaching job, Donovan made it clear that his commitment remains to leading the Bulls this season.
“My main focus is on these guys and this new team,” Donovan told reporters, per Tony Jones of The Athletic. “I understand that there’s stuff out there, and I understand that there is going to be certain speculation. But, I have to concentrate on this group, and really, my focus is on what we’re doing here in Chicago and having a game tonight, and traveling to go and play in a back-to-back.”
It was recently reported that Donovan might consider stepping away from basketball right after this season.
Apparently, he was tagged as one of the top candidates for the Tar Heels' coaching post. After North Carolina blew a 19-point lead and endured an 82-78 first-round loss against VCU in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, the program dismissed Hubert Davis.
Donovan stands as one of the most decorated college coaches of all time. He notably led the Florida Gators to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007. He subsequently left in 2015 to pursue NBA coaching, which started by handling Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the OKC Thunder.
For his stellar collegiate coaching career, Donovan was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame as part of last year's class.
“Over the years, I’ve had a lot of college guys reach out to talk to me,” Donovan said. “It’s different in dealing with players who are being paid now. I also think the cycle of the NBA today is totally different than the cycle of college. I’m focused on what I have to do right now. Like anything else, things are always changing in the game of basketball.”
