'Baffling': Alan Shearer claims Chelsea have made two big transfer mistakes

In a damning indictment of the club’s current transfer model, Alan Shearer has questioned how Chelsea can still be searching for basic defensive stability after years of heavy investment.

Chelsea’s purchasing strategy has evolved into a stock market for global talent, evidenced by their relentless pursuit of the world’s best talent. Under the guidance of co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, the 2025 summer window saw a staggering £276 million outlay, highlighted by the arrivals of Joao Pedro (£60m) and Jamie Gittens (£55m).

This buy-early philosophy is designed to secure assets before their market value explodes, locking players into historic eight and nine-year contracts to spread the cost through amortisation and maintain PSR compliance.

However, the strategy has faced significant scrutiny as the squad’s spine remains neglected. While the club has successfully monopolised the South American pipeline, securing wonderkids like Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, the failure to invest in a veteran goalkeeper or a commanding center-back has left the team structurally fragile.

What position would Chelsea be in NOW if Enzo Maresca was still in charge?

Alan Shearer cannot believe Chelsea have a centre-back and goalkeeper issue

Alan Shearer has been speaking about Chelsea’s issues of late, when featuring on the Premier League Productions’ The Weekend Wrap after the loss to Everton.

“They’re still searching for a top-class goalkeeper, a top-class centre-half, and it’s baffling, really, when you spend that amount of money, that you still haven’t got that.

“And they’re being punished for it, the keeper makes a mistake or two, the centre-half is too easy to play through.

“Again, Newcastle scored a similar goal last weekend when they went straight through the middle of Chelsea. Beto did the same as well, so they’re not going to achieve what they want while they’re still searching for that.”

Chelsea’s centre-back mistake goes back years

Chelsea’s primary failure lies in the removal of veteran leadership, exemplified by the departure of Thiago Silva in 2024. By strictly adhering to a young recruitment policy, the board has created a squad with the youngest average age in the Premier League (22.4), but one that lacks the defensive brain Silva provided.

As Shearer has noted, the current backline featuring Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato often appears ragged, suffering from lapses in concentration that an experienced captain would normally organise.

The mistake wasn’t just letting a 39-year-old Silva leave, but failing to replace his profile with a proven, vocal leader. Consequently, Chelsea has gone 15 games without a clean sheet, as players struggle with basic positional assignments under Liam Rosenior.
