Liverpool have been bullied in some Premier League games this season which sees the latest link making a lot of sense.

Modern football looks almost unrecognisable at times.

Wingers no longer seem capable of beating full-backs, goalkeepers are signed because of how good they are with the ball at their feet, rather than their ability to keep the ball out the back of the net and full-backs are increasingly looking like centre-halves playing out of position with Liverpool linked with one of the tallest in the Premier League.

Liverpool have full-back issue to address

On paper, Liverpool’s first choice duo of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong are hardly physical giants and, given the increasingly direct nature of the Premier League, they aren’t always suited to the domestic game. That the defence has looked more secure with Joe Gomez at right-back probably tells its own story given the extra height that he brings to defending set pieces.

Both right-back and left-back will probably be addressed in the summer with Gomez into the last year of his current contract, Conor Bradley out for the next year and Calvin Ramsay never really impressing the manager, the current one at least. A player with his profile is what Liverpool should be looking for though, A right-back capable of defending at one end but also of contributing in the final third too.

Liverpool linked with Chelsea defender

According to Caught Offside, this is exactly what the Liverpool recruitment team is doing in the shape of Josh Acheampong: “Chelsea’s production line of academy talent continues to generate excitement, and the latest name capturing attention across Europe is Josh Acheampong. Multiple top clubs, including Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, are monitoring his progress closely, impressed by his ability to operate effectively in multiple defensive roles, sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside.

“Potential offers in the region of €25-30 million (£21-25m) could test Chelsea’s resolve, particularly if multiple clubs formally enter negotiations.” At 6ft 3inches tall, Acheampong is tall for a right-back but also comfortable in midfield or as a centre-half in a four or a three. The sort of player who can hold down a regular starting place or challenge specialists.
