‘Go to Ibiza’–Player told to give up football, Chelsea exit hasn’t worked

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has been told to give up football and go to Ibiza with his wife after his latest disappointing display for Feyenoord, with his career stuttering after Chelsea.

Soccer News report on the 31-year-old today. His Dutch adventure is not going well, and it seems Feyenoord are growing tired.

That’s certainly the case for Feyenoord legend Willem van Hanegem. He didn’t hold back after watching last weekend’s disastrous Klassieker. Feyenoord drew 1-1 with Ajax in that game, with Sterling again failing to make an impact.

Ask for your money back

Sterling has managed just one assist in five games for Feyenoord since arriving on a free transfer in January. And while manager Robin van Persie continues to back him, Van Hanegem has seen enough.

Speaking on the Willem & Wessel podcast, Van Hanegem was blunt. Sterling, once again, failed to make any impact.

“He just wasn’t there again, no. If I were them, I would ask for my money back and say: just go home,” he said.

“You shouldn’t put a player like that through. He used to be a good player; he was still fit and fast, but that’s about it. If he bumps into you, he falls over. Isn’t that crazy?

“You shouldn’t do that yourself as a player either. If he lacks speed and has the ball, they just walk right over him. That’s pointless.”

Despite the criticism, Van Hanegem fully expects Raheem Sterling to star the next game against FC Volendam. That’s a decision he feels the fans are tired of seeing.

“We aren’t waiting for that, because we’ve already said six times that he isn’t good enough. I don’t think it’s just us, but a whole lot of people,” he added.

“This isn’t going to work”

Van Hanegem isn’t alone in his criticism of Raheem Sterling either. On the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast, René van der Gijp echoed the sentiment, urging Sterling to take control of his own future.

“He should just go to Robin van Persie and say: let’s stop this. This isn’t going to work.

“This isn’t good for me, for you, or for the club. You’re not really helping anyone with this. He should just go to Ibiza, put on his swimming trunks, and eat a delicious paella with his wife.

“Then he’d be having a great time. But this isn’t going to work out for him anymore. What a shame.”

Is it the end for Sterling?

The message in the Netherlands seems to be clear. Raheem Sterling’s time in Rotterdam is increasingly becoming unsalvageable.

Whether the club acts or Sterling takes the matter into his own hands, the feeling appears to be the same across the fanbase and pundits. Something has to give, or frustration could quickly turn to anger.
