Patriots Insider Reveals Why New England Should Add Running Back

The New England Patriots have a dynamic one-two punch at running back, but the team may look to add to the unit.

New England has Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson as its main two running backs. The team also had the likes of Elijah Mitchell, Reggie Gilliam, and Terrell Jennings, among others, to add depth to the running back room.

Yet, Patriots insider Chad Graff of The Athletic believes New England will pursue more running back help, which would allow Henderson to be the full-time kick returner.

“Even after extending Stevenson two years ago and drafting Henderson a year ago, the Pats could still use another running back,” Graff wrote in an article published on Thursday. “The problem is this isn’t a deep draft class at the position, so it’s not clear if they’ll select one.

“The Pats might just have to hope that Larison has recovered well enough from a broken foot suffered last preseason to make the 53-man roster. Part of the reason they need more depth is that it would allow them to use Henderson as a kick returner, which was one of the team’s weaknesses last season.”

New England could look to draft a running back on Day 3 of the NFL Draft to add some more depth to the position. Not only would it add some more depth to the position group, but allowing Henderson to be the full-time kick returner would also help improve the Patriots' special teams.

Yet, even if the Patriots add another running back, Stevenson and Henderson will continue to get the bulk of the carries in the backfield.
