The man who is now a Sky Sports pundit after retiring has raised questions over John Mousinho’s future and Pompey’s Championship ambitions.
John Mousinho looks to have taken Pompey as far as they can go at present.
And the Blues boss has been tipped to look for a new role away from Fratton Park, in the event of keeping his team in the Championship this season.
That’s the view of EFL pundit, Curtis Davies, who believes it will be an ‘unbelievable’ effort from the head coach to keep his team in the second tier this term.
Davies called time on an impressive playing career in 2024 and now has his eye on the Championship, as a pundit for Sky Sports.
The former defender feels Pompey have to assess their direction of travel in the event of staying up - and he wouldn’t be surprised if Mousinho looked to move on.
In an interview with Hajper, Davies said: ‘I think Portsmouth had a couple of big results, going to Charlton away, which is always a tough place to go. They won 3-1 there. They went to Millwall and beat them 3-1 as well. So, to be able to do that at Millwall was a fantastic result.
‘I think since then, they've only picked up one point.
‘John Mousinho was a player when he got the job. He retired from playing to go be the manager. So he went straight off the pitch into the dugout, and that was quite a big thing. He's done a fantastic job in getting them promoted from League One. But then it's like, right, can he go that next step in the Championship?
‘He kept them up last year. But now he's probably starting to question Portsmouth. What are we going to be moving forward? I know this club's been through a lot of heartache with financial stuff in the past, relegated to League Two and stuff like that. But what are Portsmouth now going to be? Are they slightly going to have a go at being more than just surviving relegation?
‘He's starting to ask those questions. Whenever a manager starts asking those, starts murmuring those kinds of words, you start to wonder if maybe he might have reached his ceiling at Portsmouth and, you know, keeping them up this season and maybe be looking elsewhere.
‘But that's not for me to say, I guess. But it's kind of the pattern of things, and he's done a really good job at Portsmouth. If it's there for the second time (Championship status), it's an unbelievable job that he's done.’
