Liverpool are looking at signing a defender Adam Lallana has called 'fantastic'

Liverpool could be set for a swoop on their Premier League rivals after Arsenal’s surprise Ben White decision.

The Gunners are maybe the strongest defensive side in Europe with one of the deepest rosters of elite stars.

It’s obviously a huge edge, but will always run the risk of leaving players on the fringes disillusioned.

That seems to be what has happened with White, who is unhappy with his diminished role since the emergence of Jurrien Timber at right-back, and Liverpool are poised to take advantage.

Ben White to Liverpool could be on

From Liverpool’s point of view, the Arsenal star is now firmly on the club’s radar as they weigh up whether to cash in. Liverpool wanted White when he was at Brighton, so this isn’t an idea coming out of the blue.

TEAMtalk says the Gunners would still prefer to keep him, but there is an ‘acceptance internally’ that a player of his quality and experience cannot be left playing second fiddle for too long, with Timber now firmly ahead of him at right-back.

That has opened the door to what is described as a reluctant sale this summer if the right offer arrives, and Liverpool are one of the clubs monitoring the situation closely.

White’s appeal is obvious. He is proven in the Premier League, comfortable at right-back, and still sees himself as a centre-back long term, which only adds to his value because of the flexibility he would bring. For Liverpool, that makes him an intriguing option.

He would offer experience, tactical intelligence and genuine versatility in a defensive unit that needs strengthening. The report also says Arsenal have already started groundwork on possible replacements, which matters because it suggests this is not just noise.

If Liverpool are serious, there is a genuine market opportunity here.

Ben White would offer much needed maturity to the Liverpool defence

At 28, White is at the peak of his powers and has far more match experience than any of the Reds’ recent defensive pickups.

Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni have barely started their professional careers, and even full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong lack experience.

White may not be a long-term piece to build around, but he could certainly bridge the gap between the old guard and the new wave of defenders at Anfield.
