Vikings Receive Jonathan Greenard Update as Trade Rumors Swirl

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Jonathan Greenard has been the subject of trade speculation this offseason.

The Athletic's Vikings insider Alec Lewis recently delved into why the Vikings are still looking to trade Greenard this offseason. A former third-round pick by the Houston Texans, Greenard has 217 tackles, 38 sacks, eight forced fumbles, and 14 pass deflections in his career.

While Greenard's overall sack total for his career looks good for a six-year career, Lewis highlighted the issues with Greenard's sack total decline in two years with the Vikings. Greenard had 12 sacks in 2024 but only three in 2025.

"Because he's seeking more money, this discussion point matters," Lewis wrote.

Lewis then broke Greenard's numbers with a table, which showed that Greenard improved on percentages for pressure rate, win rate, quick pressure and run stop rate from 2024 to 2025. Greenard notably played fewer defensive snaps in 2025 with just 559 after playing 918 snaps in 2024.

"Greenard's sack count fell. Everything else? Not only did the more specific pass-rushing benchmarks stay the same, but even Greenard's effectiveness as a run defender rose," Lewis wrote.

For pressure rate, Greenard improved from 15.9% to 18.1%. He improved his win rate from 15.2% to 16.6%.

On quick pressures, Greenard improved from 5.4% to 8.2%. His run stop rate improved from 7.5% to 8.8%.

Those percentages indicate the Vikings could benefit from keeping Greenard in purple this year. That said, the Vikings are paying big if Greenard stays, as he has $19 million coming his way over the next two seasons, as Lewis reported.

Minnesota's biggest obstacle to trading Greenard is durability since he only played 10 games last season and has only one 17-game season in his career, as Lewis noted. That could keep Lewis' projected top suitors for Greenard hesitant. Lewis believes the Philadelphia Eagles or the Indianapolis Colts are most primed to pursue Greenard.

"Any team poking around on acquiring him would have to be confident in his ability to stay healthy," Lewis wrote.
