DJ Lagway Making Strong Early Impression at Baylor, Sawyer Robertson Praises His “Incredible”…

DJ Lagway has started a fresh journey at Baylor after a challenging journey at Florida. He will now succeed Sawyer Robertson, who moved on to the NFL after a 2025 season where he carried much of the offensive load.

Robertson had high praise for Lagway on Wednesday.

“I met with him a couple days ago,”Robertson said. “I was in the training room and he was in there, and so I got to talk to him. Great individual, just a stand-up kid. Obviously, he’s a big name, but just what an incredible human being he is. And I’m really looking forward to watching him. We were talking about all the stuff, how the offense is coming along, and how he’s feeling, body, all of that.

“He seems like he’s doing great, seems like he loves it here. We were talking about a little bit of his time at Florida. His class is here. They care about class here at Baylor now. I don’t know if y’all knew that, but yeah, he’s doing great. And so I’m excited to watch him, obviously wish him the best of luck. I’m going to help any way that I can, but just a great individual.”

Robertson also admitted that he has gotten five years of a strength and conditioning program, but Lagway is still bigger than him.

“He’s definitely ahead of me in that aspect for sure, but yeah, he’s a tank for sure,” Robertson said.

Robertson recently participated in the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl and Baylor’s Pro Day.

DJ Lagway Secures High Praise from Head Coach Dave Aranda

The primary focus of the 2026 spring practice is the integration of Lagway into Jake Spavital’s spread offense. With the support of the coaching staff, including head coach Dave Aranda, the new Bears QB is determined to rebuild his career.

“He has a natural tenderness to it, I think he leads a lot from the football field,”Aranda said about early impressions of Lagway. “I think there’s multiple times DJ just being so early as practice one and He’s pulling guys aside.

“He’s talking to guys. He’s constantly kind of on the move and communicating and it’s just really cool to see I think his level of You know being comfortable in his own skin to do that just practice one is impressive. And so it’s a good start that way.”

While Lagway is the clear frontrunner for the starting quarterback job, the development of Edward Griffin and the arrival of Quinn Murphy hint towards a focus on long-term stability at the position.
