Lions Tabbed to Land ‘Goff-Type Quarterback'

The Detroit Lions need a third quarterback after the signing of backu (Shop KU)p Teddy Bridgewater this week.

Detroit could go the NFL Draft route and find a quarterback who resembles starter Jared Goff, as USA Today's Ayrton Ostly sees it. The Lions were tabbed as one of the landing spots for Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck.

"Detroit's offensive ecosystem turned Jared Goff into one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL," Ostly wrote. "A mix of strong, diversified skill-position talent and one of the league’s better offensive lines protecting him turned Goff into an above-average starter."

Goff hasn't missed a game since 2021, his first year in Detroit, so the Lions could afford to develop a young quarterback. Bridgewater has been in the league since 2014, so the Lions could lean on him as the primary backup if needed.

"Beck compares well to a Goff-type quarterback," Ostly wrote. "He's got prototypical size at 6-foot-5 and 233 pounds, making him durable enough to handle NFL defenders in his face. But he'll need a strong offensive line around him to stave off interior pressure, one of the weaker points of his game."

"Detroit's talents at running back (Jahmyr Gibbs), wide receiver (Amon-Ra St. Brown) and tight end (Sam LaPorta) are good enough for him to operate in the point guard role he did in college and distribute the ball in the case of a Goff injury," Ostly added.

Beck played with talented teams in Miami and Georgia before that. His college career took off when he stepped up as the Bulldogs’ starter for two seasons in Athens, Georgia. Beck threw for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns with the Bulldogs.

He transferred to Miami in 2025 and led the Hurricanes to the national championship game. Beck completed 72.4% of his passes for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns versus 12 interceptions last season.
