4 reasons why Man Utd star’s international withdrawal is blessing in disguise for Red Devils – opinion

Bryan Mbeumo will not represent Cameroon on international duty and the Manchester United summer signing finds himself in an interesting predicament.

Cameroon won’t be going to the 2026 World Cup in North America, but David Pagou’s men were scheduled to return to action during the March break.

Bryan Mbeumo had been included in the Cameroon squad for the friendlies against Australia and China, but the 26-year-old forward has since been withdrawn.

According to Manchester United’s official website, the Red Devils forward was pulled out of the Cameroon squad as a “precaution” after the 2-2 Bournemouth draw.

1. Man Utd star Bryan Mbeumo now escapes potential ‘travel fatigue’ with Cameroon’s international schedule

Bryan Mbeumo would have been travelling to Australia for his country’s first international friendly for the March break on Friday had he not been withdrawn.

Following the visit to the Accor Stadium in Sydney, Cameroon would have travelled to Melbourne to play at the AAMI Park against China on 31st March.

Mbeumo would have ended up travelling thousands of miles back and forth for two meaningless friendlies with Cameroon in the wider picture of the current season.

However, the Manchester United star can now remain at the Carrington training complex and work with the remaining first-team players on his fitness and form.

2. Bryan Mbeumo’s recovery from ‘tournament hangover’ after he represented Cameroon at the AFCON competition

Mbeumo has been a standout performer at Old Trafford this season, despite his form taking a little bit of a wobble in recent weeks under interim boss Michael Carrick.

The former Brentford ace has already had to deal with tournament ‘lag’ after his debut season at United was disrupted by the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Mbeumo went to AFCON 2025 on the back of his stellar form at United at the time and made five appearances for Cameroon and he picked up one assist for his side.

Mbeumo’s time at the AFCON came with a ‘tournament hangover’ after his return and the Cameroon ace no longer needs to be worried about those concerns.

3. Man Utd’s need to handle injuries now is important and the last thing that is needed is a Bryan Mbeumo injury

United have been reduced to a 40-match 2025-26 season after their early exits from the League Cup and FA Cup under Ruben Amorim and Darren Fletcher respectively.

However, Mbeumo has already made 27 appearances across all competitions for United in his debut season, not to mention his matches for Cameroon at AFCON.

United only have eight Premier League matches left in the 2025-26 campaign, but Mbeumo’s withdrawal from the Cameroon squad eliminates the risk of injury now.

Irrespective of his form, Mbeumo remains a key pick for United legend Michael Carrick and an unnecessary injury could cause real problems with picking attacking options.

4. Man Utd need to secure top four… and Bryan Mbeumo’s confidence needs to be rebuilt for the final push

If Mbeumo were representing Cameroon in the March break, all of the optics would be on if he could score for his country after his six-match United goalscoring drought.

On the flip side of things, the former Brentford star could have broken his drought on international duty and returned as a more confident player against Leeds United.

However, withdrawing Mbeumo from the limelight during the March international period and allowing him some time out could be beneficial for easing the pressure.

Mbeumo has netted 10 times in 27 matches for United this season and only a spark is needed for him to find his mojo going into the final push for a top-four finish.
