Chiefs Fans Freak Out Over Confusing Announcement

Kansas City Chiefs fans have been on edge lately.

Luckily for them, all-world tight end Travis Kelce decided to return for the 2026 season, so that box is checked. But two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes is rehabilitating a torn ACL and MCL, and the Chiefs just traded away All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams.

So, antannae went up when the Chiefs posted a confusing, vague announcement to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram on Thursday. It’s a short video showing nothing but a Chiefs flag with a skinny, rectangular slit cut out of the middle. “Football has a missing piece,” the caption reads. “4/2/26.”

Speculation commenced.

One fan named Mike posted on Instagram, “Swifties, rent’s due. Figure this out for us.” A Taylor Swift fan named Jazzy replied, “The Swifties are booked today, unfortunately. The blondie has an appearance at the iHeartRadio awards tonight.”

Some fans wondered whether the April 2 announcement would be about a new rivalry jersey, while several fans assumed it would have something to do with flag football.

Elsewhere in Kansas City on Thursday, Jackson County executive Phil LeVota announced that he is “creating a committee to determine the future of the Truman Sports Complex” after the Chiefs leave Arrowhead in 2031, according to The Kansas City Star‘s Sam McDowell.

In December, the Chiefs announced they would begin playing in a yet-to-be-built $3 billion dome in Kansas in the 2031 NFL season. The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead since 1972.
