Jets Strongly Warned About Giving Extension to Breece Hall

The New York Jets retained Breece Hall via the franchise tag this offseason.

The team wants to extend him this offseason on a long-term deal. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes that would be a bad idea. He explained in a column why the team would be “smart” to avoid signing him to an extension.

Kay said Hall hasn’t been the same since his “ACL tear cut [his] breakout rookie season short. While Hall returned in time to start the 2023 season and appeared in all 17 games—and missing just two contests in total since the injury—his effectiveness was diminished. He averaged 1.6 fewer yards per touch as a sophomore and continued to regress in Year 3, dipping to 5.1 yards per touch.”

“It may be time to part ways in 2027,” he stated.

Hall’s frustration with the lack of winning and his social media antics are a factor, Kay wrote.

“It’s unlikely Gang Green will snap its league-worst playoff drought this season. DraftKings Sportsbook placed the odds of the team making the postseason at +650—the third-worst in the NFL—and set a lowly over-under of total wins at just 5.5,” Kay said.

“With the Jets mired in mediocrity and Hall racking up mileage—he’s now logged 943 touches since entering the league—a breakup seems inevitable next offseason,” Kay added.

Latest on Jets Hall Extension Talks

General manager Darren Mougey’s “general philosophy” is to wait on any extension talks until free agency and the NFL draft are in the rearview mirror, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic said.

The expectation is that after the draft is over, the Jets will “re-engage” Hall and his camp about a new deal.

“There has been confidence on both sides that a deal will eventually get done,” Rosenblatt wrote.

However, there is a chance that Hall decides to bet on himself. After he was franchise tagged, Hall took to social media.

“Always been the type to bet on myself. Been working…see yall soon, Love🤞🏾,” Hall posted.

One way to interpret that cryptic quote, which is always a dangerous game, is that Hall will play out 2026 on the franchise tag.

That is risky because if Hall gets hurt, he would have no long-term financial security. However, if he stays healthy and delivers a dominant year, the talented tailback could cash in a big way next offseason.

Rosenblatt believes “there’s a chance Hall winds up playing on the franchise tag. Call it 60-40 that he signs a deal versus playing on the tag.”

Hall Is Going to Be More Expensive Than the Projections Say

Kay wrote in his column for B/R that paying Hall $10 plus million per season wouldn’t “make much sense for a rebuilding franchise.”

Hall is expected to command significantly more than that.

NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY spoke with an NFL general manager at the combine. After that conversation, Hughes revealed some stunning info on Hall’s projected deal this offseason:

“That $14.5 million, which is worth up to $15 million that Kenneth Walker got, everything that I’ve heard from talking to sources, Breece Hall should expect to get more and will likely get more,” Hughes said.
