The Chicago Bears may not know their Week 1 opponent yet. But a new league-wide development is starting to point in a very interesting direction.
With the defending champion Seattle Seahawks set to open the 2026 season in a standalone kickoff game, early projections are beginning to narrow down potential matchups. And according to recent analysis from Sports Illustrated’s Mike Kadlick, Chicago is firmly in that mix.

Would’ve loved to see Seahawks vs Rams or 49ers on opening night. But now that they’re off the table, Seattle’s possible visitors are:
– Bears – Cowboys – Patriots – Chiefs – Chargers – Giants – Cardinals
I say give us Chicago
“Led by former No. 1 pick Caleb Williams on offense and a takeaway-hungry defense that led the league in forced turnovers,” Kadlick wrote, “the Bears won the NFC North in 2025… a Week 1 bout would certainly warrant eyeballs.”
The 2026 NFL Kickoff presented by YouTube TV will kick off Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock in Seattle with the Super Bowl LX champion Seahawks.
The Seahawks’ Week 1 opponent will officially be announced when the full 2026 NFL regular season schedule is released later this spring. But as of now, many signs point to the Bears as that team.
Chicago is now being viewed as a legitimate marquee opponent for one of the biggest stages the league offers.
Bears Emerging as Must-Watch Team
The shift didn’t happen overnight.
Chicago’s 2025 season changed the perception of the entire franchise. Behind Caleb Williams and first-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears became one of the most entertaining teams in football.
The late-game production alone was a major point in their national appeal. Their seven fourth-quarter comebacks quickly turned them into must-watch television.
That kind of profile matters when the league is building its opening showcase.
The NFL consistently prioritizes storylines, star power and momentum when selecting kickoff matchups. Chicago now checks all three boxes, and Williams has quickly become one of the league’s most marketable young quarterbacks.

Kadlick’s evaluation backs that up. The Bears aren’t just competitive, they’re exciting, and this could be the year they take that next step toward becoming a real Super Bowl contender. There wouldn’t be a better way to start the season than going up against the defending champs.
Seahawks Opening Creates Clear Path for Bears
The scheduling dynamics also play a role.
With the Seahawks set to open the season at home, their list of potential opponents is already limited.
That pool shrinks even further due to international scheduling conflicts involving teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, who are set to play in Australia one day after the Seahawks’ opening night matchup.
That leaves a smaller group of viable matchups. And within that group, Chicago stands out.
Other possible options, like a Super Bowl rematch or a matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, come with some question marks. Patrick Mahomes may not even be available for Week 1 after his injury, and the Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl matchup didn’t exactly deliver the kind of excitement the league usually looks to build off of.
The Bears, on the other hand, offer something different. They are a rising contender with a young quarterback coming off a breakout year.
They are also a team that just fell short of a deeper playoff run and is now looking to prove it belongs

ICYMI: S Coby Bryant says he wants the Bears to open up the 2026 NFL season vs the Seahawks:
“We play in Seattle, they better be ready for me. I’m always motivated, I know Ben and Caleb will be motivated as well. Every game is a meaningful game, I wouldn’t mind starting the
Nothing is official yet. But the early signals are there.
