It is believed that sporting director Ross Wilson played an instrumental role in agreeing a deal for Martinez.

The Ecuadorian is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in South American football, possessing great technical skill and the ability to play in several positions.

Premier League rivals were keen on signing Martinez

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all reportedly explored a deal for the young forward, as did a number of teams on the continent, demonstrating his high potential.

However, Wilson is said to have convinced Martinez and his representatives that he would have the best chance of becoming a first-team player at St James’ Park. Buy a 2023/24 Newcastle United jersey for a discounted price from Classic Football Shirts here.

Newcastle fans will have to wait before seeing him play

Work permit rules brought in after Brexit mean that English clubs are not allowed to sign any players from abroad until they turn 18 years of age.

However, agreements can be put in place ahead of time. Chelsea reached a deal with Palmeiras for Estevao in the summer of 2024 before he officially made the switch to Stamford Bridge just over a year later.

Newcastle will have to go down a similar route with Martinez and his club, Independiente del Valle. He will remain in Ecuador until 2028 before formally completing his move to the North East of England.
